| AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE AND ASTM HYDROMETERS | The AP1 scale was selected in 1921 by the American Petroleum Institute; the United States Bureau of Mines; and the National Institute of Standards and Technology as the standard for petroleum products in the United States. |

| BAUMÉ HYDROMETERS | The Baumé scale is used for liquids heavier than water such as syrups. The scale was originally proposed by Antoine Baumé, a French chemist, in 1768. The scale has been widely accepted because of the simplicity of the numerals which represent liquid specific gravity. |

| BRIX AND BALLING HYDROMETERS | The Brix scale is used almost exclusively by the sugar industry. Degrees on the scale are equal to the percentage of sucrose by weight at a standard temperature. The Balling scale is used mainly in the brewing industry to estimate percent wort but is also used to indicate percent by weight of either dissolved solids or sugar liquors. The hydrometers are graduated in percent weight at 14° Réaumur (17.5°C). |

| PROPYLENE GLYCOL HYDROMETER | The propylene glycol instrument is a dual scale hydrometer graduated in specific gravity and percent propylene glycol by weight at 60°F. A chart is supplied indicating freezing points, boiling points and per cent by weight volume equivalents. Length 305 mm. |

| QUEVENNE LACTOMETER | The Quevenne scale is graduated in terms of specific gravity and degrees quevenne for skim and whole milk. Temperature standard 60°F. Length 330 mm. Combined form, thermometer in stem, range 20 to 100°F. |
| SALT-BRINE HYDROMETERS | The Salometer scale is graduated in terms of saturation of salt in water, at 60°F. Length 300 mm. |

| SPECIFIC GRAVITY HYDROMETERS | Specific gravity hydrometers measure the ratio of the density of a sample compared to the density of pure water at the same temperature. The specified temperature for these types of hydrometers is 60/60°F (15.6/15.6°C). |

TWADDLE HYDROMETERS |
The Twaddle scale is the result of attempting to simplify the measurement of industrial liquids heavier than water. The range of specific gravity from 1.000 to 2.000 is divided into 200 equal parts. Thus 1° Twaddle equals 0.005 specific gravity. |
